Our Mock CEM 11 Plus Tests are designed for children preparing for the CEM (Durham) 11 Plus. The Mock Tests provide suitable practice for children preparing for admission to state grammar schools in Buckinghamshire and for admission to Slough Consortium of Grammar Schools schools in Berkshire. The mock tests are also appropriate for those children taking the CEM-style 11 Plus in other towns and boroughs, such as Bexley.

  • Children from around Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Middlesex, Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire, London and the Greater London area attend our Mock Tests
  • Children do not need to be attending a Beaconsfield School of English 11 Plus course in order to sit our Mock Tests

The CEM 11 Plus

In September 2017, the Buckinghamshire and Slough Consortium of Grammar Schools 11 Plus tests will be provided by the University of Durham, as represented by the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM).

Mock CEM 11 Plus Exams BeaconsfieldWhy take a Mock Test?

  • Transferring answers quickly but accurately onto a separate Answer Sheet is an unfamiliar skill to many children and requires extensive practice. Our Mock CEM 11 Plus Tests mirror the real CEM 11 Plus in Bucks and Berks, with separate Question Booklets and Answer Sheets
  • At £70 per Test Session, our Mock CEM 11 Plus Test Sessions represent excellent value for money
  • Beaconsfield School of English is an experienced provider of Mock CEM 11 Plus Tests
  • First class Mock Test Session venue, conveniently located just a few minutes off the M40 Junction 2
  • Quick results turnaround - by the Tuesday following the Mock Tests
  • Parents/tutors receive an itemised Test Report, including a breakdown of Verbal Reasoning sub-section marks
  • Beaconsfield School of English will provide a reliable external assessment of your child's strengths and weaknesses
  • Each Mock 11 Plus Test Session includes two full CEM-style 11 Plus Mock Tests, mirroring the CEM 11 Plus test format
  • As is normally the case in the real CEM 11 Plus exam, a short break is timetabled between the two Mock Tests. During the break, the children can relax in the venue's enclosed garden

Many children naturally have misgivings about what to expect in the 11 Plus. Our Mock CEM 11 Plus Test Sessions help dispel their concerns. In particular, the Mock Test Sessions give children the opportunity to sit two full CEM-style tests. This provides invaluable experience of the timing and pace involved in the real 11 Plus.

We will send you your child's Mock Test results by email by the Tuesday after the Test Session date. The Mock Test results will help you and your child identify strengths and weaknesses in Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Mathematical Reasoning. This will enable you to focus on any skills requiring more practice.

Each of the Mock Tests A - F is a combination of individually-timed Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Mathematical Reasoning sections, mirroring the format of CEM 11 Plus exams.

The Mock Tests have been carefully researched, developed and trialled by Beaconsfield School of English. Mock Test Session results are also analysed carefully, to ensure that all six Mock Tests are of an appropriate and consistent  level. All of the questions in the Mock CEM 11 Plus Tests are relevant to the CEM (Durham) 11 Plus. All of the Tests aim to reflect the level of the real CEM 11 Plus exams.

What is Included?

The Test Session:

  • Two Mock CEM 11 Plus Tests of approximately 45 minutes each, with recorded, timed test instructions.

The Test Session Feedback:

  • A Test Report Summary and Results Tables providing a description of the Mock Test content, both the sections and the questions types. The target overall 'pass' mark for each Mock Test is indicated. The average marks achieved in the Session, the highest score and the lowest score - the range - are also indicated. There are two Results Tables. The first ranks scores in each of the Tests separately and the second ranks the combined Test scores.
  • An Individual Test Report indicating the marks achieved by your child, both as a total mark and itemised by test section. Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning scores are further itemised by sub-section (Reading Comprehension, Synonyms, Spelling, Matrices, Series etc).
  • The Test Report Summary and Results Tables and the Individual Test Report are forwarded to parents / tutors by email as a PDF file.

Please note:

  • Question Booklets and Answer Sheets are not made available to parents or tutors before, during or following Mock Test Sessions. The School retains all Question Booklets and Answer Sheets at the end of the Mock Test Session. No verbal or written feedback regarding individual test questions is given to parents or children following the Tests. This helps ensure that all candidates sitting our Mock Tests have an equal chance and that Test Reports accurately reflect the ability of the children sitting the Tests.
  • Marks in the Test Report and Test Report Summary are expressed as raw scores and also in percentage terms.
  • The Mock Test results are not a guarantee of your child's final marks in their real 11 Plus.
  • The Mock Test results do not take into account the month children are born and are not age adjusted. This is because complex algorithms, which the School cannot replicate, are involved in CEM's age standardisation procedure.

The CEM 11 Plus

The Bucks and Slough Consortium 11 Plus test provider is the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring CEM at Durham University and the 11 Plus test encompasses Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning questions. The academic standard of the test is generally aligned to the Year 5 National Curriculum. However, a wide knowledge of Standard English vocabulary is of great benefit in terms of the CEM 11 Plus.

The revised National Curriculum places an increased emphasis on English grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation. It is likely this will be reflected in the Bucks and Berks 11 Plus tests provided by CEM.

CEM 11 Plus questions are multiple choice in type. Pupils must identify the correct answer(s) from a given number of possible answers. Writing skills are not tested.

The content and format of the Bucks 11 Plus tests provided by CEM can change from year to year. The tests may include some or all of the following components and features:

  • Reading comprehension - skimming for gist, scanning for specific information, inferring (Verbal Reasoning)
  • Vocabulary - identifying synonyms and antonyms (Verbal Reasoning)
  • Maths - data handling: statistics (Numerical Reasoning)
  • Grammar, syntax and vocabulary - sentence gap-fill (Verbal Reasoning)
  • Reading comprehension - ordering jumbled up paragraphs (Verbal Reasoning)
  • Maths - short maths: mental arithmetic (Numerical Reasoning)
  • Grammar - identifying word classes (Verbal Reasoning)
  • Spelling - identifying spelling errors (Verbal Reasoning)
  • Maths - long maths : (multi-part / multi-step) word problems (Numerical Reasoning)
  • Vocabulary - identifying spelling or punctuation errors (Verbal Reasoning)
  • Grammar, syntax and vocabulary - ordering jumbled up sentences with an extra word (Verbal Reasoning)
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning - approximately 35-45 questions altogether in the Bucks CEM / Slough Consortium CEM 11 Plus papers
  • Gap-fill (cloze procedure) - completing missing letters or words in a passage (Verbal Reasoning)
The CEM 11 Plus tests reasoning, not simply knowledge. The ability to infer, deduce or conclude from evidence and reasoning is one which pupils need to develop and practise. Children also need to develop examination skills and strategies, including:

  • handling difficult test questions
  • checking the meaning of test questions
  • answering test questions at a suitably quick pace
  • entering answers correctly on the separate Answer Sheet
  • dealing with unanswered questions when time is running out

Pupils take two 11 Plus tests of around 45 minutes on the same day near the beginning of Year 6. Each test includes a mixture of Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning questions. The scores achieved on the two papers are added together and then age standardised to produce the final score.

Some CEM-style Numerical Reasoning questions involve reading comprehension skills. The children are required to find answers to mathematical problems based on a short text.

Non-Verbal Reasoning questions test the ability to logically sequence patterns and shapes. Suitable preparation for this question type involves extensive, regular practice. Numerical Reasoning accounts for approximately 30% of the overall weighting in the Bucks 11 Plus, and Non-Verbal Reasoning for the remaining 20%. It is important to score well in all three parts of the test.

The overall qualifying score for Bucks grammar schools is 121, and scores can be as high as 180+. The overall qualifying score for Slough Consortium schools is 111.

The Slough Consortium of Grammar Schools has an application process which parents need to complete if they want their child to sit the 11 Plus.
